Where is Darwin?

Situated in the far north of Australia, Darwin is one of Australia’s most unique cities. It is the biggest city in the Northern Territory and located more than 4,000 kilometres away from Perth on the west coast of the country and Sydney in the east. The greater Darwin metropolitan region covers a number of suburbs, but the centre of town tends to be focused around the suburbs of Darwin City and Larrakeyah. Both suburbs enjoy waterfront views on 3 sides and are conveniently located close to Darwin’s most popular shopping and entertainment precinct in Mitchell Street and Smith Street.
Living in Darwin
The greater metropolitan Darwin region has a population of around 84,000 and almost 11,000 of those people live in and around the central business district, or prefer living in Larrakeyah – nearby but with a little more space.
The Darwin region has two major centres to service the entire population – Darwin City in the south west and Casuarina Square in the northern suburbs. The main hospital is also in Casuarina and there are numerous smaller clinics and health facilities throughout the metro region. Darwin has a great range of both public and private schools and plenty of sports and recreational facilities for its active, outdoor living population.
The top end enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons – the wet and the dry. Darwin City locals can enjoy spectacular views across the harbour and wonderful tropical breezes from their modern high-rise apartments. Down the road, the leafy streets and large open plan houses of Larrakeyah, keep things cool and offer the best of tropical living.
Lifestyle is one of the great attractions to living in Darwin. The mild climate during the dry season encourages outdoor living and the easy access to the harbours, bays and creeks are a dream come true for sailing, boating and fishing enthusiasts.
Things to See and Do in Darwin
Darwin has a diverse and vibrant multicultural community and its food and culture are heavily influenced by its Asian neighbours to the north. There are regular markets on every week all year round with delicious food and great entertainment and specialty local shopping.
Darwin has a thriving tourism industry, thanks to attractions such as Kakadu National Park and Litchfield National Park. In Darwin visitors enjoy the spectacular sunsets at Mindil beach, the dining and leisure facilities at the Wharf and Waterfront Precincts and the beautiful heritage buildings and memorials along the Esplanade. There are wonderful things to see and do in Larrakeyah also, including the famous Doctors Gully Fish Feeding, the National Trust precinct at Myilly Point and the marina at Cullen Bay.
