Where is Fannie Bay?

Fannie Bay is one of Darwin’s most prestigious suburbs, with a great waterfront position towards the city end of the Darwin metropolitan area. It is named for the bay it overlooks and many of the homes in Fannie Bay enjoy great views and spectacular sunsets from their balconies. Fannie Bay is just over 5 kilometres from the CBD and a little over 10 minutes drive away from the Casuarina shopping precinct.
Living in Fannie Bay
Fannie Bay has a small shopping village with specialty stores, an independent supermarket and bottle shop, take away food outlets and a café. Locals can also shop at the larger Parap Village in the neighbouring suburb of Parap, conveniently home to the famous Parap Saturday Markets.
There are no schools in Fannie Bay itself, but almost half a dozen public and private junior or senior schools are easily accessible in the neighbouring suburbs. The Royal Darwin Hospital is 15 minutes away in Tiwi and numerous other health and wellness facilities are also within easy reach.
Fannie Bay is most widely known as the home of the Fannie Bay Racecourse. Sport and leisure are high priorities in Fannie Bay with the Darwin Turf club and the Darwin Ski, Sailing and Trailer Boat clubs all within a few kilometres of each other.
Things to See and Do in Fannie Bay
The most popular things to see in Fannie Bay are the sunsets, with the waterfront running the length of the suburb from the museum precinct at Gilruth Avenue right up to the edge of the popular recreational area of East Point Reserve.
Locals enjoy the bay at all hours of the day – from brisk morning walks along East Point Road, an afternoon of sailing or fishing, or simply catching up with friends for a meal, or a drink at the Darwin Ski Club, the Darwin Sailing Club or the Darwin Trailer Boat Club.
Most of Darwin flocks to Fannie Bay each July for the 8 day Darwin Cup Carnival, held annually in the dry season at the Fannie Bay race course. The Darwin Turf Club hosts around 40 race days there each year. Fannie Bay is also home to the historic Fannie Bay Gaol and Museum, previously the city’s main prison and now a tourist destination.
